Frequently asked questions

Does AVIF to PNG keep transparency?

Yes. Both formats store an alpha channel, so transparent backgrounds and soft edges carry across.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the AVIF?

AVIF is lossy and extremely efficient, while PNG is lossless and stores every pixel in full. That gap is widest on photographs. For a photo with no transparency, JPG will be far smaller.

Can I turn the PNG into something smaller later?

Yes. Convert it to JPG or WebP, or recompress the PNG without any quality change using the PNG compressor on this site.

Are my AVIF files uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser using WebAssembly, so your AVIF files stay on your device. There is no signup, no watermark and no cost, and you can convert a whole batch and download it as a zip.

About AVIF to PNG

AVIF to PNG is the combination to use when the picture has a transparent background or when you plan to edit it. Many image editors, presentation tools and design programs cannot open AVIF yet, but all of them open PNG. PNG also keeps full alpha transparency, including soft edges, and it does not lose quality when you save it again after editing.

PNG preserves the decoded AVIF pixels exactly, so nothing further is lost, but it does not bring back detail the AVIF compression removed. The file size grows dramatically: AVIF is one of the most efficient formats and PNG is one of the least efficient for photos, so a 1 MB AVIF photo can become 10 MB or more as PNG. For graphics and logos the growth is smaller. High bit depth color is reduced to 8 bits per channel. An animated AVIF becomes a still of its first frame, and metadata is removed.

AVIF is lossy or lossless, compressed with AV1; PNG is lossless, so no detail is ever discarded. Both formats can store transparency, so transparent areas in the AVIF file stay transparent. AVIF files can be animated, but the result is a still image made from the first frame. For scale, a 12-megapixel photo is typically 1 to 2.5 MB as AVIF and 15 to 25 MB as PNG. Compatibility: Every browser, editor and operating system opens it.
