Frequently asked questions
How much smaller is AVIF than BMP?
Often 95 to 99 percent smaller for photos. A 36 MB BMP can become a few hundred kilobytes, depending on content.
Why does the conversion take a few seconds?
AVIF encoding is more demanding than other formats, and large BMP images are big to process. It all runs on your device.
Is AVIF safe for sharing with other people?
Not always. Many apps cannot open it. Use JPG or PNG for sharing and AVIF for your own website.
Are my BMP files uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs in your browser using WebAssembly, so your BMP files stay on your device. There is no signup, no watermark and no cost, and you can convert a whole batch and download it as a zip.
About BMP to AVIF
AVIF is the most efficient format a browser can display, and BMP is the least efficient. Converting one into the other is the biggest size reduction you can get from this site: a BMP photo of tens of megabytes can end up under a megabyte. That is useful for old archives or scans that you want to publish on a website.

AVIF encoding takes longer than the other formats, so large BMPs can need several seconds each. The compression is lossy for photographs, so a little fine detail is lost. BMP has no transparency to carry across. AVIF opens in current browsers but not in many programs, email tools or upload forms, so convert to JPG or PNG if the file needs to travel outside the browser.
BMP is normally uncompressed, so file size depends only on the pixel count; AVIF is lossy or lossless, compressed with AV1. BMP has no transparency, so the AVIF result is fully opaque and looks the same on any background. For scale, a 12-megapixel photo is typically about 36 MB as BMP and 1 to 2.5 MB as AVIF. Compatibility: Recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display it. Support in editors, email clients and upload forms is still patchy.
