Frequently asked questions
Is any quality lost converting BMP to PNG?
No. Both formats store the exact pixels. PNG just packs them more efficiently, so the picture is identical.
How much smaller will the PNG be?
Flat graphics and screenshots often shrink by 90 percent or more. Photographs shrink less, typically around half, because they compress poorly without loss.
Should I use PNG or JPG for a BMP photo?
Use JPG or WebP if you want a small file and can accept a little detail loss. Use PNG if you need every pixel preserved.
Are my BMP files uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs in your browser using WebAssembly, so your BMP files stay on your device. There is no signup, no watermark and no cost, and you can convert a whole batch and download it as a zip.
About BMP to PNG
PNG is the lossless way out of BMP. Both store every pixel exactly, but PNG compresses the data, so the file shrinks substantially without changing a single pixel. That makes BMP to PNG the right conversion for screenshots, diagrams, scans of documents, pixel art and other images where quality must not drop. PNG is also accepted by websites and apps that refuse BMP.

The picture is identical before and after; only the file gets smaller. How much smaller depends on content: screenshots and flat graphics often shrink by 90 percent or more, while photographs shrink by half or so, since PNG cannot compress detailed images as well as JPG. BMP does not store transparency, so the PNG is fully opaque. If you only need a small file for a photo, JPG or WebP will be much smaller still.
BMP is normally uncompressed, so file size depends only on the pixel count; PNG is lossless, so no detail is ever discarded. BMP has no transparency, so the PNG result is fully opaque and looks the same on any background. For scale, a 12-megapixel photo is typically about 36 MB as BMP and 15 to 25 MB as PNG. Compatibility: Every browser, editor and operating system opens it.
