Frequently asked questions
Does GIF to PNG keep the transparent background?
Yes. Transparent pixels in the GIF stay transparent in the PNG. Edges stay as sharp or jagged as they were, because GIF transparency has no partial values.
Can I convert an animated GIF to an animated PNG?
No. The converter produces a still PNG from the first frame. It does not output animation.
Will the PNG look better than the GIF?
It will look identical. PNG supports millions of colors, but the picture still contains only the colors the GIF had. The gain is compatibility and a standard lossless format, not extra quality.
Are my GIF files uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs in your browser using WebAssembly, so your GIF files stay on your device. There is no signup, no watermark and no cost, and you can convert a whole batch and download it as a zip.
About GIF to PNG
PNG is the natural upgrade for GIF graphics. Logos, pixel art, icons and diagrams saved as GIF keep exactly the same pixels in a PNG, along with their transparent background, and PNG is better supported by modern editors and design tools. It is also the right choice for grabbing a clean still frame from a GIF without adding JPG-style compression noise.

For an animated GIF, only the first frame is converted, and the PNG is a still image. The pixels are copied exactly with no new loss, but a GIF's limited 256-color palette stays as it was. GIF transparency is all or nothing, so edges that looked jagged against a background remain jagged in the PNG; PNG supports smooth partial transparency but the converter cannot invent it. Simple graphics often come out about the same size or smaller, while photo-like GIFs can grow.
GIF is lossless but limited to a 256-color palette per frame; PNG is lossless, so no detail is ever discarded. Both formats can store transparency, so transparent areas in the GIF file stay transparent. GIF files can be animated, but the result is a still image made from the first frame. Compatibility: Every browser, editor and operating system opens it.
