Frequently asked questions
Why is the PNG so much larger than my HEIC?
HEIC uses lossy HEVC compression tuned for photos, while PNG is lossless and stores the full pixel data. Photos are the worst case for PNG because they have almost no flat areas to compress. Expect a very large file.
Is PNG better quality than JPG for iPhone photos?
Not on its own. PNG avoids adding new compression loss, but it cannot bring back detail already lost in the HEIC. At normal viewing size a PNG and a good JPG of the same photo look alike, and the JPG is a fraction of the size.
Does HEIC to PNG keep transparency?
Yes, when the HEIC has an alpha channel. Ordinary camera photos have none, so they come out fully opaque. Transparent regions in a HEIC that does have an alpha channel stay transparent.
Can I make the PNG smaller afterward?
A little. The PNG compressor on this site recompresses the file without changing any pixels. For a big reduction, convert the HEIC to JPG or WebP instead.
Are my HEIC files uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs in your browser using WebAssembly, so your HEIC files stay on your device. There is no signup, no watermark and no cost, and you can convert a whole batch and download it as a zip.
About HEIC to PNG
Most people pick PNG over JPG when the next step is editing. A JPG loses a little more quality every time it is opened, changed and saved again, while a PNG can be saved repeatedly with no further loss. That makes HEIC to PNG a sensible first step before retouching a photo, placing it in a design tool, or feeding it to software that has no HEIC support. PNG also keeps transparency, which matters for the HEIC images that carry an alpha channel, such as some cut-out subjects.

The PNG will be far bigger than the HEIC, commonly ten times or more: a 2 MB iPhone photo easily becomes 15 to 25 MB. PNG stores every pixel exactly, but it cannot recover detail the iPhone already discarded when it saved the HEIC, so the picture does not look better, only safer to edit. Metadata including GPS location is removed, and the orientation is applied so the photo stays upright. Photos you only plan to share are better served by JPG or WebP, which are a fraction of the size.
HEIC is lossy, compressed with HEVC (H.265); PNG is lossless, so no detail is ever discarded. Both formats can store transparency, so transparent areas in the HEIC file stay transparent. For scale, a 12-megapixel photo is typically 1.5 to 3 MB as HEIC and 15 to 25 MB as PNG. Compatibility: Every browser, editor and operating system opens it.
