Frequently asked questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. PNG preserves the JPG exactly as it is, artifacts included. It stops further quality loss when you edit and re-save, but it cannot restore detail that JPG compression removed.

Why is the PNG so much larger than the JPG?

JPG throws away detail to stay small, and PNG keeps every pixel. For photographs, that difference is usually five to ten times in file size.

Can I get a transparent background by converting to PNG?

No. A JPG has no transparency, so the background is part of the picture and stays as it is. Making a background transparent requires a separate editing step that this site does not offer.

Is PNG better than JPG for archiving photos?

Not usually. If you have the JPG, a PNG copy only grows the file. If you need to preserve original quality, keep the camera's original file and avoid repeated re-saving.

Are my JPG files uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser using WebAssembly, so your JPG files stay on your device. There is no signup, no watermark and no cost, and you can convert a whole batch and download it as a zip.

About JPG to PNG

The honest reasons to convert JPG to PNG are practical, not about quality. Some software, such as game engines, icon pipelines, certain design tools and a few upload forms, asks for PNG specifically. And if you plan to edit a picture many times, working in PNG stops the slow quality decay of re-saving a JPG over and over.

It does not make the picture better. A common misunderstanding is that PNG is higher quality than JPG, so converting should clean up the image. It cannot. The blocky artifacts in a JPG are already part of the pixels, and PNG records them exactly. Nor does the conversion add transparency: a white background in the JPG stays white in the PNG, and this site does not remove backgrounds.

Expect a much bigger file. A 3 MB JPG photo typically becomes a PNG of 10 to 25 MB, because PNG compresses losslessly and photos are the hardest content for it. The picture is pixel-identical to the JPG as decoded, with no new loss. Metadata such as camera details and GPS is removed, and the orientation is applied so the photo stays upright. JPG has no alpha channel, so the PNG is fully opaque.

JPG is lossy, using discrete cosine transform compression; PNG is lossless, so no detail is ever discarded. JPG has no transparency, so the PNG result is fully opaque and looks the same on any background. For scale, a 12-megapixel photo is typically 2 to 5 MB as JPG and 15 to 25 MB as PNG. Compatibility: Every browser, editor and operating system opens it.
