Frequently asked questions
Is TIFF to PNG lossless?
Yes. The pixels are carried across unchanged, and PNG then compresses them without discarding anything.
Will the PNG be smaller than the TIFF?
Usually, because TIFF files are often stored uncompressed. Scans of text and flat graphics shrink the most; photographs shrink less. If you only need a small photo, JPG or WebP will be far smaller.
Does it keep the transparent background of my TIFF?
Yes. If the TIFF has an alpha channel, the transparent areas stay transparent in the PNG.
Are my TIFF files uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs in your browser using WebAssembly, so your TIFF files stay on your device. There is no signup, no watermark and no cost, and you can convert a whole batch and download it as a zip.
About TIFF to PNG
PNG is the practical lossless replacement for TIFF when the image has to leave the print or scanning world. Both keep every pixel and support transparency, but PNG is displayed by every browser, accepted by almost every upload form and editor, and compresses the data, so the file is usually smaller than an uncompressed TIFF. It suits scanned documents, screenshots saved as TIFF, diagrams, line art and logos delivered by a print vendor.

The pixels are copied exactly, so there is no quality loss. How much smaller the PNG is depends on the picture: flat graphics and scanned text often shrink dramatically, while detailed photographs shrink less, because lossless compression has limits. For a much smaller photo, choose JPG or WebP instead. Only the first page of a multi-page TIFF is converted. Transparency is preserved, and metadata such as scanner and capture details is removed, with orientation applied first.
TIFF is normally lossless, stored uncompressed or packed with LZW or ZIP, so files are large; PNG is lossless, so no detail is ever discarded. Both formats can store transparency, so transparent areas in the TIFF file stay transparent. For scale, a 12-megapixel photo is typically 36 to 48 MB uncompressed as TIFF and 15 to 25 MB as PNG. Compatibility: Every browser, editor and operating system opens it.
