Frequently asked questions
Does WebP to PNG keep the transparent background?
Yes. Both formats support full alpha transparency, including soft, semi-transparent edges, so cut-outs and logos keep their see-through background.
Does converting to PNG improve a low-quality WebP?
No. PNG stores exactly what the WebP contains, including any compression artifacts. It prevents further loss when you edit, but it cannot recover detail that was already gone.
Why is the PNG so much larger?
PNG is lossless, and for photographs that means large files. WebP in lossy mode throws away detail you will not miss. If the image is a photo with no transparency, JPG is far smaller.
What happens to an animated WebP?
Only the first frame is converted, and the PNG is a still image. Animation is not preserved.
Are my WebP files uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs in your browser using WebAssembly, so your WebP files stay on your device. There is no signup, no watermark and no cost, and you can convert a whole batch and download it as a zip.
About WebP to PNG
PNG is the usual answer when a WebP has a transparent background. Stickers, logos, product cut-outs and icons saved from the web are often WebP with an alpha channel, and the programs you want to put them in, such as slide decks, page layout software, older image editors and print tools, may not read WebP. PNG is accepted nearly everywhere and carries the transparency across, which JPG cannot.

It is also the safer choice for editing. A PNG can be opened, changed and saved any number of times without losing quality, whereas a lossy WebP or JPG degrades with each save.
Converting a lossy WebP to PNG does not restore detail the WebP already threw away; it preserves what is there exactly, with no new loss. The price is file size. A photographic WebP of 200 KB commonly becomes 1 MB or more as PNG, while flat graphics and logos stay much closer in size. Soft edges and partial transparency are kept. An animated WebP becomes a single PNG of its first frame. Metadata is removed.
WebP is either lossy or lossless, depending on how the file was saved; PNG is lossless, so no detail is ever discarded. Both formats can store transparency, so transparent areas in the WebP file stay transparent. WebP files can be animated, but the result is a still image made from the first frame. For scale, a 12-megapixel photo is typically 1.5 to 3.5 MB as WebP and 15 to 25 MB as PNG. Compatibility: Every browser, editor and operating system opens it.
